  • What is a Cooperative Preschool?

A Cooperative Preschool is a non-profit school where parents and teachers work together to enhance a child’s preschool experience. Each year, a board of parents is elected to run the administrative operations, hire the teachers, and decide on the policies and procedures of the school. The director and teachers are responsible for all aspects of the curriculum.

What are my responsibilities as a parent?

Parents are asked to be a “parent helper” in the classroom on a rotating basis. Typically, a 3 year old’s parent will be in the classroom 4-5 times per year and a 4 yr old’s parent will be in the classroom 6-7 times per year. This may vary due to class size. Each family is also asked to be on a committee, become a committee head or serve on the board. The time commitment varies greatly depending on position, ranging from baking a few times a year to being on the Executive Board.

What will I do on my parent helper day?

Helper days are very special for both you and your child.  On your helper day, your child will be the student of the day. Besides getting to show off mom or dad, he or she will be in charge of many activities throughout the day including weather charts, line leader and snack helper.
As a parent, your main responsibility is to assist the teachers in the classroom.  You will be asked to help with the projects of the day such as art, cooking, reading with the children. The helper is also asked to bring a snack for the class and straighten the classroom for the next class

Can I bring my younger child with me on my helper day?

Due to State regulations, other children are not allowed in the classroom during class time. We do not provide babysitting, however we do try to connect parents in similar situations that are willing to sit for each other.

Can someone other than a parent be the helper?

Yes, the children love when someone special to them is the helper. We often have grandparents, aunts, uncles or even close family friends come in place of a parent.

The Preschool is located in a Church. Is there any religious affiliation?

We do rent space at the Solon United Methodist Church but we are not affiliated with any religious group.
